Upon completing his education at the Grafische (Graphics) School in Rotterdam, Jakko Achterberg started working for Lowe, Kuiper & Schouten. After one year, he went to work for a new agency set up by a colleague at Lowe, Kuiper & Schouten. At this new agency, DSDS, he first met Niels Westra, with whom he worked on the introduction of Libertel, as well as for clients such as GVB and Interliner.
After a merger with O&M, Jakko and Niels left to join Bates/Not Just Film, where Jakko worked on campaigns for, amongst other clients, UPC. In 2001, he had moved to PMSvW/Y&R, where he worked on the Vrienden van Amstel (Friends of Amstel) campaign, as well as for clients such as KPN, Hi and Holland Casino Eredivisie.
In 2004, together with Niels Westra, he moved to DDB. He worked at DDB for the next four years, for clients such as Lotto, Eneco, Centraal Beheer, BCC and Volkswagen.
